Around Hawes and Wensleydale.

Hawes, Gayle Beck

Hawes is a small, traditional Yorkshire Dales market town. Near the head of Wensleydale, one of the prettiest dales, it is a thriving centre for sheep and dairy farming, cheese making, and livestock sales. A stopover for walkers on the Pennine Way long-distance footpath and a busy general tourist centre, Hawes is a very popular destination. It has plentiful parking, accommodation and places to visit, in town and roundabouts. The Dales Countryside Museum, Wensleydale Creamery (famous cheese makers), Hawes Ropemakers and the Courtyard Gallery (working water colourist’s studio) are among the most popular town attractions.

Nearby there are many other attractions. Hardraw Force, a couple of easy miles’ stroll across the River Ure and through the meadows, is the highest unbroken waterfall in England.  A 2 hour walk will find Semer Water, a quiet and legendary lake nestling in the fells.  And to climb the fells you don’t need to leave Hawes - in different directions you’ll find Stags Fell and Wether Fell; Dodd Fell on the Pennine Way lies to the south, and that trail north from Hawes climbs Great Shunner Fell before leading down into Swaledale with one of the best views in all of England.
